If you own a business, you have spent years working making the business a success. When you decide to sell the business, a local investment bank can help maximize the selling price for your business.

Investment banks in Phoenix and Investment banks in Scottsdale handle a majority of the investment banking transactions completed in Arizona. Choosing a highly qualified & experienced investment banker can be the difference between maximizing the selling price of the business and not selling your business at all. In this article, we will attempt to explore all the important factors that you should consider before hiring your investment bank to either raise capital for or sell your business.

Industry Experience
Another important factor in choosing your investment bank is choosing a firm that is knowledgeable about and that has successfully completed multiple transactions in your industry. At CKS Advisors, we are generalists and we have closed transactions in almost every industry. A selection of our most recent transactions can be found here.

Client Reviews, Online Research and Client References
One of the most important factors when choosing your investment bank is the investment bank’s track record and work experience.

Research all the transactions the investment bank has completed. Inquire about the success rate of the investment bank’s dealings & their reputation with clients. Don’t forget to talk to the former clients of the investment bank. You can also research the firm online and gather important information from client reviews.

Fnd out if the investment firm has ever been sued by previous customers. Customers can research investment banks using BrokerCheck. BrokerCheck gives a snapshot of the broker’s employment history, regulatory actions, and investment-related licensing information, arbitrations and complaints as well as instantly show if the firm is registered, as required by law, to sell securities and offer advice or both.

Local Knowledge and Local Team
If you own an Arizona based business, a Scottsdale investment bank or Phoenix investment bank can be an ideal fit. Local investment bankers understand Arizona’s local economic conditions and relationships with the most important buyers in the market. At CKS Advisors, we have been active in the Arizona market for more than a decade. We are especially known for completing transactions in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

As a service to local entrepreneurs, CKS Advisors maintains a directory of resources for Arizona entrepreneurs and a directory of venture capital, angel investor, and private equity investors in Arizona.

Arizona Investment Banking Fees
Most investment banks charge two distinct fees, a retainer fee and a transaction fee.

Investment banks often require a non-refundable retainer fee, sometimes called an upfront fee, work fee, or an engagement fee. Retainer fees exist mainly to ensure that the selling firm is committed to the sales process. Retainers are usually paid on a monthly basis over a reasonable time frame (usually not longer than 12 months). They are also usually capped at an agreed upon level. The average monthly retainer fee for Arizona investment banks is typically $20,000 a month.

The success fee or transaction fee is paid at the time of successful closing of a transaction on the enterprise value of the company being sold. It is based on Lehman Fee Structure. The success fee typically ranges from 5 to 10% depending on the size of the transaction.
